When you use a Teleconverter you gain in the reach of the lens BUT what do you loose? Well you will loose a stop or two of light. The general rule for sharpness is to NOT push the lens to it's maximum aperture. For a 1.4x teleconverter, back it off by 1/3rd of a stop and for a 2x teleconverter, 2/3rds of a stop.
Oh by the way, Teleconverters are also often known as Extenders (for the Canon shooters among us.) and yes they are exactly the same thing.
